ABOUT OUR AREA
Croftamie is a small village located 3 miles south west of Drymen in the western rural area of Stirling Council. The Community Council covers an extensive rural landward area of around 25 km2 and is bordered by Drymen Community Council (at the Endrick) to the north and east, by Killearn Community Council to the east and south and by West Dunbartonshire Council to the west. It has a low population density of around 15 persons per km2.
The A809 trunk road passes through the village. The close proximity to Glasgow, (18 miles) and easy access to other central belt locations make it an attractive residential location for commuting. The village has retained much of its rural character - most of the surrounding land is still used for agriculture. The River Endrick forms the northern boundary of the Community Council area.
The village and surrounding area once supported a thriving industry spinning flax and cotton. The proximity of the River Endrick ensured plentiful supplies of water. The building of the railway in the 19th century allowed the development of a sawmill and facilitated the village’s position as a railhead for agricultural equipment and supplies for the surrounding area.
